A Doulas Journey to Home Birth: Childbirth Education Class - Hypnobabies

One of the things I’ve done differently in this pregnancy is choosing a childbirth education class that fits with the birthing experience I hope to have. With my first pregnancy I took a crash course hospital class and while the class itself was exactly as advertised it didn’t bring a lot to the table as far as having your baby at home. Since we had already paid for the class before switching providers we decided to follow through and hope for the best. In hindsight we should have asked for a refund and found a different class or even put that money towards hiring a doula but what is done is done.

Going into this pregnancy I knew I wanted to do things differently this time. As a doula I have seen many variations of normal in birth and have learned that birth is raw, emotional, and at times unpredictable but it’s nothing like what we are taught it is. I have yet to witness a birth play out like it does in the movies; water breaks in the store, dad freaks out, mom starts yelling in pain. Actually as a Hypnobabies® Childbirth Hypnosis Doula, aka Hypno-Doula, I have witnessed some of the most calm and relaxed births. It’s amazing what can happen when you change the conversation with yourself and shift the language used when talking about birth. This incredible thing happens, these families are having peaceful, empowered, natural births that they have been an active part of. No matter how many families I see use hypnosis during their pregnancy and birthing time I am always awestruck. So naturally that’s the route I’ve decided to take this time.

We signed up for a local Hypnobabies® course and we begin our journey this Sunday. To say I’m excited is an understatement. Even though this is what I do for a living it fascinates me to be on the other side. What gets me even more excited is that I get to do this with my husband and share this journey with him, even if it is just a tiny blip of what I experience as a Hypno-Doula. I am a very hands on learner and knew I would be way more present and committed on a whole if we attended the 6 week class. I also love that I can invite my birth team to join us for the Birthing Rehearsal, which is something I love doing with my Hypnobabies® clients. The materials have changed a bit since I first started attending Hypnobabies® guided births so I am also excited to get a feel for the new tracks and materials. This is something I thoroughly looking forward to and just as excited to share my experience from a Hypno-Family point of view.

I know the in person class isn’t right for everyone, be it scheduling or childcare, so I want to make sure you all know that Hypnobabies® does offer a Self-Study course. It’s broken down into 5 weeks and is perfect for those parents who enjoy self-study and can commit to doing it on their own time. It provides the same tools as the class, with the exception of the rehearsal, including the workbook, CDs, and all the information you need to prepare for your birthing time. If the home study course is something that’s right for you head over to my affiliate link to purchase your self-study course and hypnosis tracks. If you do go this route and would still like to do the birthing time rehearsal most local Hypnobabies® course instructors and Hypno-Doulas are happy to facilitate your personal rehearsal.

You can learn more about Hypnobabies here and find a local class here.
